Bananas Dipped in Chocolate with Nuts

Give ordinary bananas a wow makeover with melted chocolate and nuts and watch your guests go wild.

The Backstory: Who doesn’t like bananas?  No one I know. Now add some melted chocolate, chopped nuts, and put it all on a stick and freeze it, and you have a seriously decadent dessert or snack. These are a fun dessert to make because you can experiment with so many different variations. Pretty much anything that you can chop and will stick to the warm chocolate, will work. Try chopped peppermint candies, Heath bars (my favorite), coconut, sprinkles, mini baking chips, or chopped pistachios. More of the Backstory after the recipe

Ingredients

  • 4 large bananas, cut in half
  • 16 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 8 popsicle sticks
  • chopped nuts optional
  • shreeded coconuts optional
  • sprinkles optional

Instructions

  1. Line a large baking sheet with wax paper. Set aside. Place your desired toppings in bowls and set aside. Put 2 inches of water in the bottom of a double boiler. Bring to a simmer. Put the chocolate chips in top part of double boiler, stirring occasionally until melted and smooth. When fully melted, remove from heat.
  2. Take each half-banana and insert a Popsicle stick, leaving a sufficient enough stick to use for dipping and eating. Dip each banana into the chocolate, letting the excess chocolate drip back in to the pan. Using a spoon, coat the chocolate with your desired toppings. Place on baking sheet. Continue until all bananas are done. Cool in refrigerator for 2 hours and serve.
  3. Note: These are especially delicious as a frozen treat. After dipping, place baking sheeting in freezer for 3 -4 hours and serve. Delicious!

…The Backstory continues: These are hard to resist.  Prepare a lot because this will disappear as soon as you serve it.  Remember to take yours first or you will be out of luck. Also, If you have young children, they can help to insert the ice cream sticks in the bananas and help with the dipping–just make sure the chocolate isn’t too hot for little hands to assemble the bananas. This is a good place for them to learn as well as help out.  Have fun in the kitchen!

Note: These are especially delicious as a frozen treat. After dipping with chocolate and toppings place baking sheeting in freezer for 3-4 hours and then serve. Delicious!
