Bechamel Sauce

This may look like a bland sauce but with the addition of a few spices, the taste can be surprisingly delicious.

  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 tsp. Kosher salt
  • 1/4 tsp. black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg or to taste optional
  • 2 cups Whole milk


  1. Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Do not brown. Remove from heat and add the flour, stirring constantly. Put back on the stove. Add the salt and pepper and stir until completely smooth. Add milk, a little at a time stirring constantly. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Reduce heat and simmer for about 1-2 minutes.
